The government have recently announced the end of the ‘New Deal for Musicians’ scheme. This scheme, part of the benefits system, gave the opportunity for unemployed musicians to be recognised and supported in achieving their aims of making a career from their music. This scheme is now being phased out and no further referrals onto the programme will be made from June. The scheme will be closed altogether in October and replaced by ‘Flexible New Deal’. While statements about the closure of the scheme have intimated that musicians will still be supported if they show significant talent, there has been no information given as to how this might be assessed and who by. We wait to see if ‘Flexible New Deal’ will support a vibrant and diverse range of musical styles.
