The Unravelling - 13 Arcane Hymns

THE UNRAVELLING - 13 ARCANE HYMNS

In 13 Arcane Hymns, Calgary's The Unravelling have created an awesome album which charts the full range of the harder side of music. Heavy riff laden metal ranging from their dark deep and slow tracks like ‘Move Forward Until You Are Dead’ to the faster more thrash influenced ‘Where Will it End’ and ‘Last Rights Protest’. With harsh driven passion filled vocals setting off their music perfectly, they even have time to show a slightly funky side to proceedings on the opening track ‘Becoming Master’.  The Unravelling combine their heavy tracks with strong hooks guaranteeing that you will remember this album for some time to come. Simply excellent.
13 Arcane Hymns is out later this summer. Keep checking their website for details.

Lulla Violet - Lordess

LULLA VIOLET - LORDESS

In Lordess, Lulla Violet have created a dark and brooding EP dripping with class. With grunge edged bass shades in songs such as ‘Sticks and Stones’ coupled with wonderfully anguished vocals, Lulla Violet build up an angst filled performance. ‘Petrol’ again draws you in, lulls you into a false sense of security then hits you with a simply frenzied climax.  ‘Lewd’ is an acoustic track with a slice of melancholy and a vocal line that moves the song along on a wave of torment.  Lulla Violet have produced a great EP well worth checking out.

You can get hold of a copy of Lordess from itunes, or get your hands on a hard copy from one of their up coming gigs.

Kaiowas - Kaiowas

KAIOWAS - KAIOWAS

Heavy and dark metal of epic proportions played in fine style from LA’s Brazilian ex-pats Kaiowas. Vocals buzz down in the mix, chilling you and delivering music with a distinctive moody edge.  Sampled spoken elements combine with the sometimes raw vocal performance to add brooding menace to tracks such as ‘Rise’.  There is also a nod to an industrial sound with the beats that introduce ‘Universal Mind’.  Kaiowas have certainly brought something different to the mix with their excellent debut EP.

The eponymously titled EP is available now to download from itunes and Amazon. You can also pick up a physical copy from cdbaby.

Dirty Summer - The Purity Ball

DIRTY SUMMER - THE PURITY BALL

Another great lesson in electro punk noise from Dirty Summer.  Purity Ball moves things on a step from their eponymously titled EP, taking their gritty keyboard / guitar noise and twisted harmonica to a new level. ‘2:10’ kicks in with massive bass distortion and hate filled vocals with typical mad keyboards.  ‘War is Bad’ is a slice of aggressive brilliance, spat with vicious sarcasm, guaranteed to have you screaming along after the first listen.  ‘Seven’ has a almost metal riff and heaviness to it followed by more frantic keyboards.  ‘Knees’ and ‘Scorpions With People’s Faces’ show another side to this great band.
